Material and paint
While working with fabric that I could use to enclose my box, I tried staining/dying it with a mixture of black paint and water. I soaked the material in it for around an hour until it has absorbed all the liquid.
I laid the material out on brown paper to dry for a little bit of time, but I grew impatient. To speed up drying, I placed another brown sheet over them and stood on it.

When I removed the material off the brown paper, it had left and interesting print on the paper. I decided to keep them as they had left the paper looking detailed and textured.
Overall I was pretty pleased with the end result, even if it was a mistake.

Contextual work: Yasuaki Onishi
Yasuaki Onishi is a Japanese instillation artist. This
series of work, called the 'Reverse of volume' is created using basic
materials, such as clear plastic, strings of black glue and fishing wire.
From the work I have researched by Onishi so far, it has
inspired me greatly and continues to so. I find his use of simple materials
interesting, as well as the instillation aspect. It had inspired me to begin
creating larger scale work, and while I am still in the development stages of
my idea, there is little doubt in my mind that my final piece will be
instillation/sculpture based. Personally, I feel that having the aim of
creating a large scale interactive/instillation piece would capture the ideas I
currently have.
I am really invested in my current concept, but I was having
trouble putting all the various pieces together so it seemed disjointed, like a
series of separate works/experiments. This has sent me on the road to combining
the various elements, and disregarding the elements that doing fit in.

Audio practice
I have started working on the audio aspect for my idea. I am
starting with sounds from the external world, such as wind, rain and traffic.
Once I have experimented with these aspects I will move on to sounds from an
open internal space, and once completed I will begin working with sounds from
internal confined spaces. I will hopefully have satisfactory results after each
of these practices and be able to apply them to my concept.

Sound and Space (back to the drawing board)
After revisiting the various notes, sketches and studies I
have done over the past 3 weeks, I have decided to go focus on what I believe
to be my strongest concept for this brief. Essentially, this is a study of how
sound can affect how humans experience space. While I will be working with
sound, other senses will also come into play here, such as smell and touch as
methods of reducing or increasing how we perceive space.
Pretentious rambling over, I am basically going to go back
to the drawing board with this idea. While I feel that it is a solid idea, I
think I may have approached the idea the wrong way. I am going to use the notes
I have already done as reference for my new approach.
I'm going to break my studies into areas and develop each individually at this stage (as listed in the handout)
- Space
- Shape
- Time
- Occupation
- Interaction
- Movement
- Scale
- Noise
- Internal/External
- Manmade/Organic
